EMAIL from Habitat for Humanity - Austin, Texas - LEED for homes project
Below is photo of the beautiful roof that Drexel Metals along with our DM-ARM member Austin Roofing and Siding have donated to Jessica Guerrero and her family.  Thank you so much for your generous gift! Jessica was very concerned about choosing the most durable roof when selecting her options, and I assured her that choosing a metal roof would be better for durability, energy efficiency, fire protection, potential solar panel installation, and feeding clean rainwater to her 500-gallon cistern.

Here are some other green features of this project.  We will be building to the five-star standard of the Austin Energy Green Building Program, the Five-Star Plus level of the Energy Star Program, and the Gold or perhaps Platinum Level of LEED for Homes.  We typically build to the Austin Energy four or five-star level (typically four stars for homes with shingle roofs and five stars for homes with metal roofs because of the added points for a cool roof made mostly from recycled materials).  The green items in the homes that we have been building for the past couple of years include closed cell foam to enclose the attic in the house's thermal envelope, BIBS in the walls, high efficiency HVAC system, water heater and toilets, drought-tolerant landscaping, and low-E windows with low SHGC and low U-factor, and of course metal roofs in communities that allow them (if only they all did!).  There are many other measures, the most important being holistic up-front design and orientation of the house, porch, overhangs, trees, and other shading devices.  The special items that we are adding for the LEED program include Termi-mesh, borate treatment on the walls, and the rainwater cistern.

Austin Habitat for Humanity provides sustainability advice for all 250+ Habitat affiliates in the hot humid climate zone, and we host affiliates from all over the South and conference attendees from all over the nation at our communities.  Thank you Drexel Metals and Austin Roofing and Siding!
